About the role

At Epic Games, we make award-winning games and engine technology that empowers creators to build visually stunning 3D content.

We are looking for a Game Design Intern to join the Fortnite Events team and help create memorable, large-scale multiplayer experiences. Working alongside internal and co-dev designers, artists, engineers, and producers, you will prototype, implement, and polish gameplay features for upcoming Fortnite live events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Gameplay & Feature Design: Design and implement gameplay mechanics and features specifically tailored for live, narrative-driven multiplayer events.
  • Client-Server Prototyping: Learn to prototype dynamic player experiences in a large-scale, client-server replicated network environment.
  • Cinematic & Sequencer Integration: Work within Level Sequencer to align keyframed event triggers, collaborate with cinematic artists on timing and structure, and integrate gameplay elements into live event sequences.
  • Playtesting & Iteration: Participate in team playtests, providing constructive feedback and independently iterating on designs based on team direction.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Debug interactive gameplay issues and build test plans to support quality assurance (QA) validation.
  • Cross-Functional Communication: Maintain clear design documentation, reference materials, and progress updates for cross-disciplinary stakeholders.

Requirements

Technical Skills & Experience

  • Practical, hands-on experience using Unreal Engine.
  • Proficiency with Unreal Engine Blueprints and the Gameplay Ability System (GAS).
  • Experience with level design systems, such as World Partition, Data Layers, Level Sequencer, and basic multiplayer replication.
  • Portfolio of playable video game projects demonstrating experience across the production cycle (includes student, indie, or freelance work).

Problem Solving & Mindset

  • Genuine interest in Fortnite, particularly live events and ambitious, narrative-driven content.
  • Ability to independently troubleshoot technical issues and leverage available engine resources to resolve blocking bugs.
  • Strong cross-disciplinary collaboration and communication skills to convey design scope, risks, and ideas clearly.

Additional Logistics & Eligibility

  • Start Date: Flexible start date in 2027. Recruitment is ongoing until ideal matches are found.
  • Work Authorization: Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the posting location for the full duration of the internship program.
