About the role

Every day, tens of millions of people come to Roblox to explore, create, play, learn, and connect across 3D immersive digital experiences. The Engine Networking team acts as the nervous system and bloodstream of the platform—ensuring game state is synchronized across all clients in real time while delivering the content and 3D assets that bring experiences to life.

As the Engineering Manager for Engine Networking, you will lead and empower a high-caliber team of systems engineers working across real-time state synchronization and end-to-end asset delivery. In this hands-on technical leadership role, you will oversee the architecture, execution, and career growth of engineers building high-performance C++ systems across resource-constrained, multi-platform environments (mobile, desktop, console). You will guide strategies spanning low-level network stacks, transport protocols, CDN integration, caching, and download scheduling to deliver content to every player as fast as physically possible.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engineering Leadership & Mentorship: Recruit, coach, and grow a high-performing team of systems and networking engineers; cultivate strong engineering practices, operational excellence, and technical career progression.
  • Architectural Strategy & Execution: Drive the technical vision and roadmap for complex, multithreaded systems that handle real-time state synchronization and asset streaming for millions of concurrent users worldwide.
  • End-to-End Content Delivery: Oversee the asset delivery pipeline—including CDN edge integration, caching architectures, download prioritization, prefetching, decoding/decompression, and incremental streaming under tight memory limits.
  • Cross-Platform Optimization: Ensure high-performance execution across desktop, mobile, and console clients—balancing strict bandwidth, memory, and CPU budgets across diverse hardware.
  • Cross-Functional Alignment: Collaborate closely with platform, engine, content, and infrastructure teams to align networking protocols and asset streaming with broader product goals.

Requirements

Engineering Leadership & Low-Level C++ Expertise

  • 8+ years of total software engineering experience, including direct experience managing or leading high-performing systems, networking, or content-delivery engineering teams.
  • High proficiency in C++ environments with deep fluency in low-level systems programming, memory behavior (smart pointers, templates, custom allocators), and CPU performance tuning.
  • Proven track record of driving execution for complex, multithreaded systems connecting millions of concurrent users in client/server environments.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering systems across multi-platform deployments (mobile, desktop, console) under tight resource constraints.
  • Familiarity with transport-level optimizations, Linux networking, Quality of Service (QoS), and Congestion Control algorithms.

Education & Work Logistics

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent professional experience) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
  • Ability to work onsite 3 days per week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays) at Roblox HQ in San Mateo, CA.
  • Note: Roblox may not be able to support certain visa categories or future H-1B sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in game engine development, game networking, or asset pipeline design—including game loops, state sync, and asset prioritization.
  • Hands-on experience with the asset delivery stack: CDNs, caching/eviction layers, download scheduling, prefetching, compression/decompression, and time-to-first-frame optimizations.
  • Active involvement or leadership in open-source systems engineering communities.

Total Rewards & Workplace Benefits

  • Compensation: Base salary of $293,800 – $343,340 USD + comprehensive long-term equity grant package.
  • Healthcare & Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage options; mental health resources and wellness stipends.
  • Financial Security: 401(k) program with company matching; life and disability insurance.
  • Time Off & Work Culture: Generous PTO policies, observed holidays, and hybrid workplace flexibility.
