About the role

Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems that benefit society. Anthropic's compute runs on a growing global portfolio of data centers built with development partners.

As a Senior Field Engineer on the Data Center Design and Engineering team, you will serve as the eyes, voice, and technical authority on active project sites. Working side by side with developers, general contractors, and engineers of record, you will inspect installed work against approved drawings, resolve technical issues on-site, drive root-cause investigations, and speed up construction schedules. This role requires >50% overnight travel across active data center construction sites, with the remainder spent working remotely or from a home office base.

Key Responsibilities

  • On-Site Engineering Presence: Walk active job sites to verify installed work against approved designs, single-line diagrams, P&IDs, and specifications; hold design acceptance authority on behalf of the engineering team.
  • Issue Resolution & Prioritization: Maintain a prioritized list of open field engineering issues with assigned owners and target dates; follow up in person, challenge unviable schedules, and escalate blockers early with concrete recommendations.
  • Root-Cause Failure Investigations: Lead structured root-cause analyses (e.g., 5 Whys, 8D) when equipment, installations, or commissioning tests fail; trace failures to underlying causes, confirm corrective actions, and audit across other portfolio sites.
  • Commissioning & Handover Clearance: Inspect complex technical interfaces between power, cooling, controls, and structural systems prior to commissioning tests; expedite RFIs, deviations, and field engineering changes.
  • Design Feedback Loop: Translate recurring site issues and field conditions into design modifications, updated standards, and improved audit checklists for future project builds.
  • Stakeholder Management: Influence external general contractors, vendors, commissioning agents, and developers without direct reporting authority to ensure technical compliance and site safety.

Requirements

Field Experience & Technical Skills

  • Proven background on active industrial project sites in energy, power generation, heavy industrial, data centers, oil & gas, refining, or semiconductor fabrication as an engineer, project manager, or commissioning lead.
  • Strong proficiency reading and interpreting technical drawings, single-line diagrams (SLDs), P&IDs, engineering specifications, and construction schedules.
  • Practical experience leading structured failure investigations (e.g., 5 Whys, 8D) and driving corrective/preventative actions (CAPA) through completion.
  • Demonstrated ability to persuade and align non-direct contractors, vendors, and developer partners to adhere to quality standards and design intent.
  • Strong commitment to site safety, with the authority and willingness to issue a stop-work order for unsafe conditions.
  • Exceptional written communication skills with a track record of producing concise, actionable field reports.

Education & Work Logistics

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent practical experience/training) in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil/Structural Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Ability to travel overnight >50% of the time to active data center construction sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience as an Owner’s Representative overseeing EPC or General Contractors.
  • Hands-on commissioning, startup, or system turnover experience in high-density industrial facilities.
  • Technical background in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil/Structural/Architectural (CSA) engineering.
  • Professional certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) license, PMP, or OSHA 30.
  • Proficiency with construction management software and scheduling tools (e.g., Procore, Primavera P6).

Total Rewards & Benefits

  • Compensation & Equity: Base salary of $320,000 – $405,000 USD + competitive equity package with optional equity donation matching.
  • Healthcare & Family Support: Comprehensive health, vision, and dental coverage; generous paid parental leave.
  • Time Off & Flexibility: Flexible working hours and generous PTO policy.
  • Workplace & Perks: Collaborative team culture, travel coverage, and full visa sponsorship support through external immigration counsel.
