About the role

Databricks is the Data and AI company. Over 20,000 organizations worldwide—including 70% of the Fortune 500—rely on the Databricks Data + AI Platform to build, scale, and govern data applications, analytics, and AI agents.

The IT Digital Employee Experience team builds the internal tools, platforms, mobile applications, and data systems that power how every Databricks employee ("Brickser") works. From custom procurement applications and SaaS inventory systems to AI-powered assistant tools, mobile apps for executive leadership, and data pipelines that ingest from dozens of SaaS vendors, this team directly elevates workforce productivity.

As a Senior Software Engineer and Technical Lead on this team, you will own software projects end-to-end. You will architect production full-stack applications on the Databricks Platform, build scalable ETL/ELT pipelines ingesting from enterprise SaaS platforms, implement identity/authorization controls (Okta, OAuth, RBAC/RLS), and deploy Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers to integrate internal tools with AI assistants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Full-Stack Application Development: Design, build, and maintain production full-stack web and mobile applications (procurement platforms, SaaS management tools, executive mobile apps) used company-wide.
  • Data Pipeline Engineering: Architect and own scalable ETL/ELT data pipelines that ingest, transform, and serve data from dozens of enterprise SaaS systems into Databricks (Delta Lake, Unity Catalog).
  • Identity & Security Integration: Architect authentication and authorization flows using Okta, OAuth, service principals, Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), and Row-Level Security (RLS) patterns.
  • AI Tooling & MCP Integration: Build and deploy Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers connecting internal tools to AI assistants, and implement LLM-powered features (classification, data enrichment, prompt guardrails).
  • DevOps & Infrastructure as Code: Manage CI/CD deployment pipelines, infrastructure automation, and secret management using GitHub Actions, HashiCorp Vault, Terraform, and Docker.
  • Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Act as the software engineering team lead—mentoring junior engineers and contractors, breaking down roadmap items, authoring PRDs/design docs, and enforcing testing/PR standards.
  • Cross-Functional Stakeholder Alignment: Work directly with business leaders across Security, Legal, HR, Finance, and Engineering to gather system requirements and navigate technical trade-offs.

Requirements

Software & Data Engineering Depth

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related quantitative field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with demonstrated full-stack proficiency across backend, frontend, and data engineering.
  • Python Expertise: Advanced proficiency in Python as a primary language for building full-stack applications and services in production.
  • Cloud Architecture: Hands-on experience designing, deploying, and operating applications on public cloud platforms (AWS and/or Azure).
  • Data Pipeline Engineering: Practical experience building ETL/ELT pipelines, working with structured and semi-structured data stores, and ensuring data quality.
  • DevOps & Tooling: Familiarity with CI/CD automation (GitHub Actions), Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), containerization (Docker), and secret management.
  • Security & Identity: Experience building systems that handle sensitive PII/enterprise data using access controls, RBAC/RLS, and identity management protocols.
  • AI/ML Tooling & MCP: Hands-on experience with LLM integrations, prompt engineering, evaluations, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers.
  • Technical Leadership: Proven ability to author clear architecture design documents, lead project planning, and mentor other engineers.

Work Logistics

  • Ability to work out of Databricks' San Francisco, CA headquarters.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with the Databricks Platform ecosystem (Unity Catalog, Delta Lake, Databricks Apps, Workflows, Genie, Lakehouse).
  • Advanced SQL query tuning and data modeling proficiency.
  • Familiarity with enterprise Identity and Access Management (IAM) systems (Okta, Opal, Google Workspace).
  • Hands-on mobile application development experience (iOS / Android).
  • Background in IT operations, procurement platforms, or SaaS management systems.

Total Rewards & Benefits

  • Compensation & Equity: Zone 1 base salary range of $159,900 – $219,900 USD + annual performance bonus eligibility + Databricks equity grants.
  • Healthcare & Wellbeing: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance options for employees and eligible dependents.
  • Financial & Retirement: 401(k) plan participation, life and disability insurance, and home office/tech stipends.
  • Time Off & Flexibility: Paid holidays, flexible paid time off, paid sick leave, and paid parental leave.
