About the role
Verkada is transforming how organizations protect their people and places with an integrated, privacy-sensitive AI-powered platform spanning video security, access control, air quality sensors, alarms, intercoms, and visitor management. Operating across 30,000+ customers with a $5.8B valuation, over 2 million deployed devices power the "operating system for buildings" in physical spaces worldwide.
The Verkada Core Platform team builds the platform, web architecture, and shared services that enable Verkada to rapidly launch new IoT devices and power the core Command management interface.
As an Engineering Manager on Core Platform, you will lead a multidisciplinary team of backend and frontend software engineers building high-polished web applications and foundational IoT primitives. In this hands-on engineering management role, you will balance technical leadership—prototyping features, writing code, and conducting architectural reviews—with product design alignment, people management, and fostering a high-performance engineering culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Core Platform & Command Engineering Leadership: Lead end-to-end project execution for Verkada's Command web product and shared IoT platform services, directing both frontend and backend software engineers.
- Hands-On Technical Leadership: Maintain deep technical involvement by actively writing code, prototyping new platform capabilities, and conducting system architecture reviews.
- Product & Design Collaboration: Partner closely with Product Management and Product Design teams to translate feature requirements into polished, intuitive, and delightful user experiences.
- Engineering Standards & Best Practices: Drive coding standards, continuous integration practices, automated testing, and development methodologies to ensure high-quality, maintainable code.
- People Operations & Team Growth: Recruit, hire, retain, and mentor software engineers, establishing clear career development paths, performance management frameworks, and knowledge-sharing routines.
- Emerging Technology Evaluation: Evaluate emerging web frameworks, server-side technologies, and database architectures to maintain platform modernness and scalability.
Requirements
Full-Stack Systems & Engineering Management Depth
- Management Experience: 4+ years of professional experience managing, leading, and inspiring software engineering teams—including direct ownership of hiring, performance management, and team retention.
- Engineering Track Record: 8+ years of professional software engineering experience across backend and frontend web application development.
- Full-Stack Proficiency: Working knowledge of at least one modern server-side framework (e.g., Go, Python, Node.js) and one relational/non-relational database system (e.g., Postgres, MongoDB).
- Product & UI/UX Polish: An exceptional eye for design, user experience detail, and interface polish within complex web platforms.
- Agile Delivery: Proven experience leading engineering pods within fast-paced, iterative Agile development environments.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related engineering field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience architecting web platforms that interact directly with physical IoT devices, edge appliances, or real-time streaming services.
- Hands-on proficiency with modern frontend frameworks (React, TypeScript) and micro-frontend architectures.
- Experience building developer platform services, shared internal frameworks, or design system components used by multiple product engineering teams.
Total Rewards & Benefits
- Compensation & Equity: Estimated pay range of $200,000 – $285,000 USD + Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) + performance bonuses.
- Healthcare & Wellness: 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance options for employees + wellness allowance.
- Time Off & Holidays: Unlimited Paid Time Off (PTO) policy + 11 companywide paid holidays + paid parental leave & fertility benefits.
- On-Site Perks & Transport: Healthy lunches and dinners provided daily on-site + commuter stipends.
