About the role
Reddit is a community of communities home to over 100,000 active subreddits and approximately 126 million daily active unique visitors.
The Storage Infra team builds and operates the massive data storage and caching infrastructure powering Reddit. Our caching layer serves hundreds of millions of queries per second across hundreds of billions of keys, efficiently storing hundreds of terabytes of data across thousands of production nodes.
As a Senior Software Engineer on Storage Infra, you will partner closely with key internal stakeholders—including Machine Learning, AI, and Search teams—to build distributed storage solutions that scale alongside Reddit’s rapid product growth. You will own both managed and self-hosted storage infrastructure, automate operational workflows, maintain ultra-high availability, and mentor software engineers across the company.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Strategy & Roadmap: Contribute to the long-term technical strategy and architecture of Reddit’s distributed data storage and caching infrastructure.
- High-Scale Storage & Caching Operations: Refine, optimize, and maintain data storage engines (Redis, Memcached, Cassandra, Postgres, MySQL) supporting hundreds of millions of daily active users.
- Infrastructure Automation & Operations: Own end-to-end data write, read, and storage pipelines along with the tooling, automation, and observability frameworks needed to operate thousands of nodes reliably.
- ML & Search Infrastructure Partnership: Partner with Machine Learning, AI, Search, and Data Science teams to build tailored, low-latency storage capabilities for real-time inference and indexing.
- Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Mentor engineers on designing, building, and operating core storage services used by hundreds of software engineers across Reddit.
- Availability & Incident Response: Maintain extremely high availability, fault tolerance, and data reliability standards across the storage portfolio.
Requirements
Distributed Storage & Systems Engineering Depth
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building and running internet-scale software systems (preferably focused on machine learning storage infrastructure).
- Core Programming Languages: Hands-on development proficiency in one or more systems/backend languages: Golang, Python, C++, or Java.
- Distributed Storage Expertise: Practical experience implementing feature additions, low-level performance optimizations, and bug fixes to distributed storage systems.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or an equivalent technical field.
- Cross-Functional Communication: Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with engineering, data science, machine learning, and product teams.
Work Logistics
- Ability to work remotely within the United States or hybrid out of Reddit's office hubs (SF, LA, NYC, Chicago).
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on operational and architectural experience with high-scale storage technologies: Redis, Memcached, Cassandra, Postgres, or MySQL.
- Direct experience scaling caching layers that handle high-throughput query rates (millions of QPS) and multi-terabyte memory footprints.
- Background in storage hardware profiling, kernel-level I/O tuning, or custom storage engine development.
Total Rewards & Benefits
- Compensation & Equity: Base salary range of $217,000 – $303,900 USD + Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) + bonus eligibility.
- Comprehensive Healthcare: Top-tier medical, dental, and vision insurance options for employees and eligible dependents.
- Family & Life Support: Generous paid parental leave, family planning support, and caregiving assistance.
- Retirement & Time Off: 401(k) program with employer match, flexible vacation time off, and paid volunteer days.
