About the role

Anthropic is an AI safety and research public benefit corporation dedicated to building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We view AI research as an empirical science, working as a single cohesive team to advance safe and beneficial artificial intelligence.

The Platform Intelligence team turns each new Claude model's capabilities into production API features for developers worldwide. Sitting at the intersection of AI research and product engineering, the team owns the core platform capabilities shaping what Claude can do—including tool use, built-in tools (web search, code execution), thinking controls, structured outputs, and the memory, files, and skills APIs. Additionally, Platform Intelligence leads the API side of every major Claude model launch, ensuring safety controls, SDKs, documentation, evaluation frameworks, and cloud partner platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) are fully aligned for launch day.

As a Staff Software Engineer on Platform Intelligence, you will lead technical strategy, API design, and distributed systems engineering across multi-team initiatives. You will work directly with unreleased frontier models, converting raw model capabilities into developer interfaces that are intuitive, durable, and resistant to misuse.

Key Responsibilities

  • Model Capability Productization: Translate research-grade Claude model capabilities into public API interfaces, built-in tools (web search, code execution), structured outputs, and agentic memory/file APIs.
  • Model Launch Engineering & Operations: Lead the technical readiness and execution for Claude model launches across internal APIs, SDKs, documentation, safeguards, and public cloud platforms (AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI).
  • Cross-Functional Technical Leadership: Set architectural direction across dependent engineering and research teams, author design proposals, review cross-team API specs, and mentor engineers.
  • Built-In Tools & Infrastructure: Build, operate, and scale real-time execution tools (code execution, web search, context memory systems) under production traffic with high availability and low latency.
  • Automated Evals & Quality Assurance: Design and deploy continuous evaluation frameworks to catch model capability regressions and safeguard against vulnerabilities prior to public release.
  • AI-Native Engineering: Utilize AI coding tools regularly to design, prototype, build, and review software systems.

Requirements

Software & AI Platform Depth

  • Technical Project Leadership: Demonstrated track record leading multi-team technical projects from initial architectural design through launch and production operations.
  • Distributed Systems Mastery: Proven experience designing and operating high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems where correctness, availability, and reliability are critical.
  • Product & API Design Sense: Strong product intuition with deep care for developer experience (DX), clean public API design, and SDK ergonomics.
  • Execution in Dynamic Environments: Ability to make sound technical decisions with incomplete information as models, research breakthroughs, and launch timelines evolve.
  • Cross-Functional Communication: Outstanding ability to explain technical trade-offs clearly to research scientists, product managers, safety teams, and GTM partners.
  • Mentorship & Quality Standards: History of elevating team performance through thorough code/design reviews and active technical mentorship.
  • AI Safety Alignment: Genuine interest in the societal impact of AI systems and Anthropic’s mission to build safe, beneficial AI.

Education & Work Logistics

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent practical experience/training) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a relevant quantitative field.
  • Hybrid Policy: Ability to work from an Anthropic office hub (San Francisco, CA; New York, NY; or Seattle, WA) at least 25% of the time.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building public developer platforms, public REST/gRPC APIs, or SDK ecosystems.
  • Hands-on experience working directly with LLMs (tool call design, agentic loops, prompt engineering, or eval frameworks).
  • Experience managing launches or complex system migrations with hard deadlines and multiple dependent teams.
  • Background in building agent tools, web search scrapers, code sandboxes, or large-scale memory/context storage systems.
  • Experience building integrations for major cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).

Total Rewards & Benefits

  • Compensation & Equity: Annual base salary range of $405,000 – $485,000 USD + company equity grants + optional equity donation matching.
  • Healthcare & Well-Being: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and eligible dependents.
  • Time Off & Leave: Generous flexible vacation policies, paid company holidays, and comprehensive paid parental leave.
  • Immigration & Visas: Full visa sponsorship available, including dedicated legal counsel for candidate immigration processing.
  • Office Perks: Modern collaborative office space, catered lunches, flexible working hours, and regular research forums.
