Director of Engineering - Developer Workflows

As the Director of Engineering for Studio Systems, you will lead the core engineering organization responsible for Roblox Studio’s technical foundation and IDE experience. You will own the long-term architecture, technical strategy, and delivery for critical systems—including scripting engines, debugging tools, compiler toolchains, IDE performance, and core application architectures. Leading senior engineers and managers working in large-scale C++ codebases, you will elevate Studio into a world-class, extensible, and performant 3D development environment, while shaping future AI-assisted creation workflows.

Key Responsibilities

• Technical Direction & Architectural Leadership: Own the vision, architectural evolution, and multi-year execution roadmap for Studio’s core IDE and developer systems.
• Foundational Systems Management: Lead engineering teams across core IDE areas, including C++ scripting runtimes, debugging frameworks, compilation toolchains, and IDE performance/reliability.
• Engineering Quality & Standards: Establish and enforce standards for maintainability, performance, extensibility, and system stability across complex production environments.
• People & Team Leadership: Manage, mentor, and grow senior software engineers, principal architects, and engineering managers across multiple sub-teams.
• Cross-Functional Executive Alignment: Partner with Engine, Product, Infrastructure, Design, and Executive Leadership to translate platform strategies into actionable roadmaps.
• AI-Assisted Creation Integration: Drive the technical integration of intelligent tooling, LLM workflows, and AI-assisted creation features into Studio's core IDE systems.

Requirements

Engineering Experience & Domain Mastery

• 15+ years of software engineering experience, with a proven track record of leading large-scale, long-lived technical systems.
• Deep systems engineering background with extensive expertise in large-scale C++ codebases.
• Significant leadership experience building developer tools, IDEs, code editors, compiler toolchains, or 3D engine/editor technologies.
• Demonstrated track record of leading teams through major architectural, platform, or tooling transitions.

Leadership & Strategic Execution

• Proven experience managing senior individual contributors (ICs) and engineering managers across multi-team structures.
• Strong technical judgment with the ability to communicate architectural trade-offs to both deep technical teams and executive leadership.
• Familiarity with game development workflows, 3D creation pipelines, or interactive development environments.

Work Logistics & Sponsorship

• Ability to report onsite 3 days per week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays) at Roblox HQ in San Mateo, CA.
• Note: Roblox may not be able to support certain visa categories or future H-1B sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

• Direct experience with AI-assisted creation tools, intelligent IDE autocomplete, or LLM-powered developer workflows.
• Prior leadership experience within game engine development (e.g., Unreal Engine, Unity, Proprietary C++ engines) or enterprise developer tooling.
