About the role

Every day, tens of millions of people come to Roblox to explore, create, play, learn, and connect across 3D immersive digital experiences. The Engine Networking team powers every play session across the platform—delivering the real-time game state and content delivery infrastructure necessary for seamless multiplayer interactions at scale.

As the Engineering Manager for Engine Networking, you will lead a team of systems engineers evolving our core multiplayer networking technology to support massive concurrent player counts in vast, physics-driven 3D worlds. In this hands-on leadership role, you will set strategic roadmaps, guide system architecture, recruit and coach engineering talent, and write/review high-performance C++ code across cross-platform environments (mobile, desktop, console).

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical & People Leadership: Recruit, mentor, and grow a team of high-performing systems engineers; foster a psychological safety culture that encourages calculated risk-taking and technical excellence.
  • Engine Networking Strategy: Own roadmaps, technical initiatives, and production outcomes across the full software lifecycle for low-latency networking and real-time state synchronization.
  • Hands-On Technical Involvement: Maintain deep technical fluency by reviewing code, guiding architectural design, conducting technical reviews, and contributing through hands-on C++ programming.
  • System Scalability & Performance: Drive innovations in real-time state replication, asset streaming, congestion control, and transport protocols to ensure smooth play sessions for millions of concurrent users.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with peer teams across the larger Engine organization, product leads, and executive leadership to align technical investments with platform goals.

Requirements

Engineering Leadership & Systems Expertise

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 5+ years in engineering management or technical team leadership.
  • Demonstrated track record of leading teams building high-performance, low-latency, real-time distributed systems (e.g., network infrastructure, state sync engines, or content delivery networks) at consumer-internet scale.
  • Fluency in C++ with a deep commitment to inspecting code, conducting deep-dive debugging, and understanding low-level system mechanics.
  • Extensive experience with systems-level programming in resource-constrained, multi-platform environments (mobile, desktop, console).
  • Exceptional cross-functional communication and stakeholder management capabilities.

Education & Work Logistics

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent professional experience) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Ability to work onsite 3 days per week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays) at Roblox HQ in San Mateo, CA.
  • Note: Roblox may not be able to support certain visa categories or future H-1B sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct domain background in game engine development, game networking, or multiplayer state replication.
  • Hands-on experience with asset streaming, transport-level networking (custom UDP protocols, congestion control, QoS), or Linux kernel networking.
  • Familiarity with cross-platform optimization across low-spec mobile hardware, consoles, and desktop devices.

Total Rewards & Workplace Benefits

  • Compensation: Base salary of $293,800 – $343,340 USD + comprehensive long-term equity grant package.
  • Healthcare & Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage options; mental health resources and wellness stipends.
  • Financial Security: 401(k) program with company matching; life and disability insurance.
  • Time Off & Work Culture: Generous PTO policies, observed holidays, and hybrid workplace flexibility.
