About the role

Every day, tens of millions of people come to Roblox to explore, create, play, learn, and connect in 3D immersive digital experiences created by a global community of developers.

As a Principal Software Engineer on the Game Engine Data Model team, you will innovate on the core C++ data structures that form the foundation of the Roblox platform. The Data Model framework acts as the connective fabric uniting engine capabilities with creator tools—bridging low-level networking, Luau scripting, Roblox Studio, rendering pipelines, and physics simulation. In this high-leverage architectural role, you will set the technical direction for core engine systems, build metaprogramming/code-generation tooling, and optimize low-level memory usage across all supported client platforms (Desktop, Mobile, Consoles, and VR).

Key Responsibilities

  • Core Engine Architecture: Establish the foundational architecture, performance standards, and long-term technical direction for the Game Engine Data Model framework.
  • Metaprogramming & Tooling: Design and build C++ code-generation, static analysis, and Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) reflection tooling (using libclang and custom compiler tools) to interface engine primitives with creator scripting and APIs.
  • Cross-Platform Optimization: Architect and profile systems-level C++ code that executes with extreme efficiency across diverse device hardware—from high-end PC GPUs to mobile and console chipsets.
  • Cross-Functional Integration: Partner with Networking, Scripting, Rendering, Physics, and Roblox Studio teams to deliver unified engine capabilities.
  • Engineering Excellence & Mentorship: Lead by example, advocate for robust automated testing frameworks, conduct deep C++ code reviews, and mentor engineers across the engine organization.
  • End-to-End Ownership: Own critical engine features across their full lifecycle—from initial architectural RFC to global production deployment and memory profiling.

Requirements

Technical Systems Mastery

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with deep expertise in C++ code-generation and static analysis tools (e.g., libclang, Abstract Syntax Trees / ASTs, custom compiler frontends).
  • Outstanding low-level systems C++ programming skills with deep curiosity regarding CPU behavior, memory layout, raw vs. structured blocks, template metaprogramming, smart pointer overhead, and virtual dispatch.
  • Degree in Computer Science (BS or MS) or equivalent practical experience.

Software Engineering & Quality

  • Track record of taking full ownership of complex software projects from design through deployment.
  • Strict attention to potential edge cases, system failure modes, and automated unit/integration testing methodologies.
  • Strong interpersonal and technical communication skills with a history of driving cross-team alignment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working on proprietary or commercial 3D game engines (e.g., Unreal Engine, Unity, Frostbite) or large-scale real-time simulation frameworks.
  • Deep knowledge of cache locality, custom memory allocators, and multi-threaded engine task scheduling.

Total Rewards & Workplace Benefits

  • Compensation: Base salary of $295,250 – $345,040 USD + comprehensive long-term equity grant package.
  • Healthcare & Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage options; mental health resources and wellness stipends.
  • Financial Security: 401(k) program with company matching; life and disability insurance.
  • Time Off & Work Culture: Generous PTO policies, observed holidays, and hybrid workplace flexibility.
