About the role
Gemini is a global crypto and Web3 platform founded in 2014 by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, delivering secure, reliable crypto products to millions of individuals and institutions across 70+ countries.
As a Principal Product Engineer on the Tooling team, you will set the multi-year technical vision and overarching architecture for customer-facing platform tooling across backend microservices, web, and mobile surfaces. Accountable for company-level initiatives, you will solve the hardest technical challenges across organizational boundaries—defining the core systems behind user onboarding, identity verification (KYC/compliance), and customer support. Operating at the highest level of technical leverage, you will shape Gemini's AI-assisted development practice and agentic SDLC pipeline—where specialized agents plan, implement, and review code alongside human engineers—while growing engineering leaders and setting standards across the enterprise.
Key Responsibilities
- Company-Level Architectural Vision: Define and own the multi-year technical vision, reliability standards, and system architecture for Gemini's customer-facing platform.
- Cross-Organizational Technical Governance: Review critical designs across the company, drive architecture for the most complex technical challenges, and set operational guidelines across engineering verticals.
- Core Initiative Accountability: Take full accountability for company-critical programs spanning onboarding, compliance (KYC/identity), and support infrastructure from ambiguity through long-term operation.
- Agentic SDLC & Frontier AI Tooling: Shape the evolution of Gemini's agentic development pipeline, establishing operational patterns, human-in-the-loop gates, and AI-assisted engineering practices for the broader organization.
- System Defense & Incident Leadership: Proactively raise security, reliability, and code quality standards across teams while debugging and contributing to mission-critical codepaths when required.
- Technical Multiplier & Talent Development: Mentor and develop senior engineers and future engineering leaders, delegate strategic initiatives, drive bar-raising in hiring, and foster a healthy engineering culture.
Requirements
Experience & Technical Domain Leadership
- 12+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating complex production systems at scale.
- Recognized expertise in core technical domains with a track record of end-to-end accountability for company-level systems and multi-year initiatives.
- Proven history of driving architectural direction for high-stakes technical problems spanning multiple engineering organizations.
- Fluency across all layers of the stack (backend microservices plus web and/or mobile).
- Proficiency in a typed language (e.g., TypeScript, Scala, Java, Go) and comfort with JavaScript/TypeScript on web and mobile surfaces.
- Consumer-facing application background paired with product sensibility and UX awareness.
Strategic Vision & AI Tooling
- Fluency with AI coding tools and automation, with a clear point of view on advancing agentic software development frameworks.
- Demonstrated ability to act as a technical multiplier—growing leaders, delegating strategically, and influencing cross-domain initiatives.
- Exceptional executive-level written and verbal communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical bets to diverse audiences.
Presence Requirements
- Ability to report in person twice a week at Gemini's hub office in New York City, NY.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in the crypto, Web3, or fintech industry.
- Deep domain expertise in onboarding systems, identity verification (KYC), regulatory compliance tooling, or customer support infrastructure.
- Experience architecting, operating, or scaling production AI agents or agentic workflows.
- Familiarity with React / React Native and cloud microservices architectures.
- Experience representing engineering externally through technical writing, open-source contributions, or conference talks.
