About the role

Holds, limits, locks, and account closures are crucial tools designed to safeguard genuine customers. However, when applied improperly, legitimate users face unnecessary friction, operational teams become overwhelmed, and customer churn increases. At Mercury, we believe financial services should be empowering and seamless—not restrictive or stressful.

As a Product Manager for Fraud, you will define how risk friction is designed, deployed, and measured. You will build systems across account integrity, real-time decisioning, step-up verification, and money movement to protect Mercury and its customers from fraudulent activity. Partnering with Data Science, Engineering, Operations, and Compliance, you will design automated risk mechanisms that minimize disruption for good users while equipping internal risk teams with high-efficiency operational tools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fraud Strategy & Roadmap: Own the product strategy and execution roadmap for fraud prevention across account integrity, payment flows, and customer verification.
  • Dynamic Friction & Risk Controls: Architect customer journeys that apply step-up verification, holds, and limit structures dynamically based on real-time risk signals.
  • Machine Learning & Decision Engine Alignment: Collaborate closely with Data Science to train, deploy, and evaluate machine learning models, balancing precision and recall trade-offs.
  • Internal Risk Tooling: Build scalable operational platform tools for risk and support teams to investigate case volumes, handle exceptions, and resolve high-touch cases efficiently.
  • Metrics & Performance Measurement: Establish performance indicators measuring risk mitigation effectiveness, false-positive reduction, operational efficiency, and customer retention impact.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Navigate trade-offs between risk exposure, regulatory compliance, and user experience alongside key stakeholders.

Requirements

Experience & Domain Expertise

  • 7+ years of professional product management experience, with specific experience building fraud, risk, or compliance systems in fintech or banking environments.
  • Deep empathy for customer experience with a thorough understanding of how risk controls impact conversion, user satisfaction, and churn.
  • Hands-on experience working with automated decisioning engines, rule sets, machine learning pipelines, and real-time transaction processing.

Analytics & Execution Capabilities

  • Advanced analytics proficiency: comfortable analyzing rule and ML model performance (precision, recall, ROC-AUC) to inform product prioritization.
  • Strong cross-functional leadership skills with a proven ability to reconcile competing priorities across Legal, Compliance, Engineering, and Growth teams.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, capable of translating technical risk concepts into clear product strategies.

Total Rewards & Benefits

  • Compensation Model: Competitive base salary paired with meaningful long-term company equity (RSUs or stock options).
  • Workplace Model: 100% remote work flexibility across the United States and Canada.
  • Benefits: Healthcare, dental, vision, retirement matching plans, and dedicated wellness support.
