About the role
Guest & Host Technology builds the end-to-end experience that connects people around the world—from the first search to the moment a trip becomes a memory. Because that experience lives natively on iOS and Android with no cross-platform framework in between, Airbnb is looking for engineers who move fluidly across both platforms to keep architecture, performance, and product quality coherent everywhere guests and hosts show up.
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will operate as a true dual-platform native engineer with solid, current fluency in both iOS and Android. You will own features end-to-end across both apps, write production code in Swift and Kotlin, and serve as a trusted technical authority making architectural decisions that hold up identically on both platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Dual-Platform Delivery: Design and ship features natively across both iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin) codebases, frequently leading parallel releases on both platforms.
- Idiomatic Translation: Partner with Product and Design teams to translate single product specifications into platform-idiomatic UI and UX implementations, rather than porting one platform's UI directly to the other.
- Architectural Coherence: Uphold architecture, performance, and app-size standards across both mobile apps, flagging and addressing areas where native codebases begin to drift apart.
- Client Contract Evolution: Shape shared client contracts (GraphQL schema, logging pipelines, testing frameworks) consumed by both mobile applications.
- Mentorship & Pairing: Help other engineers ramp into dual-platform development workflows through technical reviews, pairing sessions, and architectural guidance.
- Technical Reviews: Participate in technical reviews and architecture discussions where your judgment spans both native ecosystems.
Requirements
Experience & Technical Capabilities
- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Deep, current, hands-on expertise in both native iOS (Swift, UIKit, SwiftUI) and native Android (Kotlin, Jetpack Compose)—not legacy exposure to one platform and active work on the other.
- Track record of independently shipping medium-to-large complexity features on both platforms without requiring extended ramp-up time.
- Solid opinions on mobile architecture, backed by practical experience keeping two independent native codebases coherent at scale.
- Pragmatic perspective on cross-platform tooling—understanding why fully native architectures matter at scale without leaning on React Native or Flutter wrappers.
Execution & Mindset
- Ability to own features end-to-end amid ambiguity, knowing when to escalate architectural decisions versus executing independently.
- Strong collaboration skills when working alongside product managers and designers to refine ambiguous requirements.
Benefits & Workplace Perks
- Equity & Bonus: Annual performance bonus eligibility and Airbnb equity grants.
- Travel Credits: Employee Travel Credits to explore stays and experiences worldwide.
- Health & Wellness: Comprehensive healthcare coverage, retirement options, and wellness resources.
- Remote Flexibility: US Remote-eligible working model with occasional office visits or team offsites.
