About the role
Every day, tens of millions of people come to Roblox to explore, create, play, and connect across 3D digital experiences. The Roblox Avatar defines player identity across the metaverse, backed by a rapidly expanding User-Generated Content (UGC) marketplace.
As a Senior Software Engineer for UGC Validation, you will lead technical initiatives to programmatically evaluate, validate, and transform large-scale 3D asset datasets uploaded to Roblox. This is an applied 3D graphics, computational geometry, and systems engineering role—not manual QA. You will apply deep expertise in 3D mathematics, mesh topology, skinning, rigging, and rendering pipelines to build automated ingestion engines that detect geometry exploits, correct topological anomalies, and ensure millions of user-created avatars and accessories adhere to strict platform schema standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Large-Scale 3D Data Pipelining: Architect, scale, and optimize high-throughput automated processing pipelines for massive volumes of 3D UGC assets (meshes, textures, rigs, and animations).
- Exploit & Artifact Detection: Develop programmatic, graphics-driven algorithms to identify topology exploits, malicious mesh hacks, shading anomalies, and visual artifacts prior to marketplace publication.
- Automated Quality & Optimization: Build automated software checks enforcing structural integrity, avatar schema compliance, and optimal rendering performance across diverse mobile and desktop devices.
- Computational Geometry & Rigging: Apply linear algebra, computational geometry, skinning weights, and skeletal hierarchy principles to resolve complex asset validation constraints.
- Cross-Functional Engine Alignment: Serve as the core technical authority on geometric processing, collaborating with Machine Learning, Game Engine, and Product teams to integrate asset validation tools across Roblox.
Requirements
Academic & Technical Foundation
- Education: BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Graphics, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
- 3D Math & Graphics Mastery: Exceptional foundation in linear algebra, computational geometry, rendering pipelines, shading, and lighting concepts.
- Geometric Processing Expertise: Strong hands-on experience analyzing, manipulating, and optimizing 3D mesh data, topology, UV maps, and vertex structures.
- Animation & Rigging: Practical understanding of skeletal animation, rigging structures, skinning weights, and bone hierarchies.
Software Engineering & Execution
- Strong proficiency in production languages such as C++, Luau, Python, or similar languages.
- Proven track record in system optimization, data pipelining, and software architecture for large-scale datasets.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing or optimizing runtime game engine features (e.g., Unreal Engine, Unity, proprietary C++ engines).
- Hands-on experience with procedural geometry or automated 3D asset optimization (decimation, level-of-detail / LOD generation).
- Familiarity with applying machine learning models or neural networks to 3D asset processing and mesh classification.
Total Rewards & Workplace Benefits
- Compensation: Base salary of $196,750 – $243,290 USD + comprehensive long-term equity grant package.
- Healthcare & Wellbeing: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage options; mental health resources and wellness stipends.
- Financial Security: 401(k) program with company matching; life and disability insurance.
- Time Off & Work Culture: Generous PTO policies, observed holidays, and hybrid workplace flexibility.
