About the role

At Affirm, we are reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without hidden fees or compounding interest.

As a Software Engineer on the Batch Developer Experience team, you will partner with product and infrastructure engineering teams to make batch development and testing faster, safer, and more reliable across Affirm. In this backend-focused role, you will build internal developer tools and platform frameworks that streamline workflows, strengthen testing suites, and improve the resilience of critical batch workloads using Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Developer Tooling & Batch Workflows: Design, develop, and launch backend tools and infrastructure services that accelerate batch development and testing across engineering teams.
  • Project Execution: Partner with tech leads and managers to break down complex architectural projects into discrete, well-tested tasks delivered iteratively in production.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Participate in the product development lifecycle with Product Management, Design, and Analytics to articulate technical constraints, evaluate trade-offs, and manage system risk.
  • Operational Excellence & On-Call: Maintain platform health and operational availability by creating metrics dashboards, setting up alerts, responding to incidents, and supporting team on-call shifts.
  • Code Quality & Community: Maintain high engineering standards through GitHub code reviews, mentorship, and participation in the engineering interview process.

Requirements

Technical Depth & Backend Engineering

  • 1.5+ years of professional experience as a software engineer.
  • Hands-on experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems proficiently in Python or Kotlin.
  • Familiarity with core distributed systems concepts and cloud-native building blocks (AWS, MySQL, Kubernetes).
  • Demonstrated ability to convert business scenarios into modular, extensible, and thoroughly tested software components across large codebases.
  • Strong code navigation, debugging, and code review skills.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills for effective collaboration across global engineering teams.

Education & Work Logistics

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience building internal developer tools, CI/CD testing frameworks, or developer productivity platforms.
  • Hands-on experience optimizing high-throughput batch processing engines, asynchronous workflows, or distributed job schedulers.

Total Rewards & Benefits

  • 100% Employer-Paid Healthcare: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with 100% of premiums covered for employees and their dependents.
