About the role
Finance Analytics builds Coinbase's core financial data and reporting foundations, ensuring Accounting, Controllership, Treasury, and FP&A run accurate, timely, and auditable operations. Sitting at the intersection of data engineering, data science, and business analytics, the team owns source-of-truth datasets in Snowflake and Databricks, production pipelines, and automated reconciliation workflows.
As the Staff Analytics Engineer on Finance Analytics, you will set the technical direction for Coinbase's global financial data layer and partner side-by-side with Accounting and FP&A leadership. Beyond building ELT pipelines, you will deeply understand how books are closed, audited, and controlled under SOX compliance. You will architect modular data models, establish data contracts with upstream product engineering teams, build automated reconciliation frameworks in Airflow and dbt, and mentor analytics engineers across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Data Layer Architecture: Design and own the architecture of curated, well-documented, source-of-truth financial models in Snowflake/Databricks that tie out directly to the general ledger.
- Accounting & Close Partnership: Collaborate with Accounting and FP&A to support month-end and quarter-end close workflows—building automated datasets, reconciliations, and financial reporting tooling.
- Audit-Ready Data Governance: Build SOX-compliant data controls, end-to-end data lineage, change management protocols, and audit evidence for internal and external auditors.
- Pipeline Engineering & Orchestration: Build, deploy, and maintain scalable batch (and near-real-time) pipelines using dbt and Airflow, incorporating backfill procedures, dependency management, and runbooks.
- Data Quality & Reconciliation Frameworks: Define reusable data quality tests, continuous monitoring, and alerting SLAs, agreeing with Accounting on formal definitions of financial correctness.
- Data Contracts & Developer Abstractions: Drive data contracts with upstream engineering teams, mentor Analytics Engineers, and build shared developer tooling (Python packages, custom UDFs, LLM-assisted workflows).
Requirements
Technical Expertise & Staff-Level Scope
- Staff-Level Leadership: Proven track record leading multi-quarter, cross-team technical initiatives, establishing data architecture strategy, and mentoring senior engineers.
- Accounting & Finance Exposure: Either formal accounting/finance education (degree, CPA/CMA coursework) or extensive hands-on experience supporting Accounting/FP&A teams (e.g., month-end close, GL reconciliations, financial reporting).
- Expert SQL & Strong Python: Mastery of advanced SQL (window functions, complex aggregations, query optimization) and Python (OOP, modular framework design). Production SQL and ETL experience is required.
- Advanced Data Modeling: Deep expertise designing modular, reusable source-of-truth dimensional models (star/snowflake schemas, Slowly Changing Dimensions) used across multiple enterprise functions.
- Production Pipeline Ownership: Demonstrated experience building and operating production ETL/ELT pipelines using dbt and Airflow (or similar orchestration engines) with strict SLAs and automated monitoring.
- Modern Cloud Data Warehousing: Hands-on expertise with enterprise cloud data warehouses/lakehouses (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, or Redshift).
Work Logistics
- Ability to participate in quarterly, multi-day, in-person working sessions ("surges").
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience operating within public company SOX compliance, SOC 1/SOC 2, or regulated financial services controls.
- Hands-on experience developing Python-based data quality frameworks or custom dbt packages for financial reconciliation.
- Domain knowledge in cryptocurrency assets, blockchain transactions, or high-volume fintech transaction platforms.
Total Rewards & Benefits
- Compensation & Equity: Base salary of $207,485 – $244,100 USD + equity compensation package + annual variable performance bonus eligibility.
- Comprehensive Healthcare: Premium medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage.
- Financial Security & Retirement: 401(k) retirement savings plan with company contribution options.
- Work Culture & Flexibility: Remote-first working model with structured quarterly team surges, professional development resources, and flexible time off.
