About the role

Duolingo is the world's most popular learning platform, on a mission to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available. We rely on data-driven experimentation—running over 300 concurrent A/B tests with our massive user base—to continuously elevate our learning experience and business growth.

As an Engineering Manager at Duolingo, you will co-lead cross-functional software engineering teams within either the Language Learning Pillar (core lesson experiences, gamified exercises, scaffolding, and pedagogical personalization) or the Monetization Pillar (subscriptions, ad platforms, and in-app purchases). Partnering closely with Product Management, Design, and Data Science, you will build and retain high-performing engineering teams, drive rapid A/B experimentation, balance feature velocity with architectural maintainability, and ship high-impact features that directly move company-level KPIs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Cross-Functional Team Leadership: Co-lead an integrated product pod alongside Product Management, Design, and Research leads; define team OKRs, strategic roadmaps, and execution cadences.
  • People Management & Talent Development: Attract, hire, mentor, and retain diverse software engineering talent; set clear performance expectations, provide continuous coaching, and foster an inclusive culture.
  • Experimentation & KPI Execution: Drive end-to-end execution of multi-engineer features from technical specs through A/B testing, statistical evaluation, and production deployment to move core business metrics.
  • Technical Quality & Architectural Standards: Set engineering quality standards, establish robust CI/CD practices, manage tech debt, and ensure platform reliability, scalability, and observability.
  • Operational Excellence & Prioritization: Eliminate delivery roadblocks, establish predictable shipping cadences, and make informed technical trade-offs between short-term speed and long-term platform health.

Requirements

Engineering Management & Consumer Product Depth

  • Software Management Track Record: Demonstrated experience leading, managing, building, and retaining teams of software engineers within high-performing technology organizations.
  • Consumer Product Execution: Proven history of shipping multi-engineer, multi-week+ software projects that deliver measurable business and user impact.
  • Experimentation & A/B Testing Fluency: Deep comfort in data-driven environments; experience defining product metrics, designing A/B experiments, and evaluating statistical outcomes alongside analytics partners.
  • Technical & Architectural Depth: Technical background sufficient to guide architectural decisions, critique code/system designs, evaluate trade-offs, and mentor senior engineers.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Outstanding written and verbal communication skills; track record of authoring clear technical specs, status updates, and executive briefings.

Education & Work Logistics

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Ability to work onsite from or relocate to Pittsburgh, PA or New York City, NY.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading cross-functional engineering pods focused on core consumer product outcomes, monetization funnels, or mobile subscription growth.
  • Demonstrated success setting team OKRs and operating cadences that consistently deliver outsized returns on corporate goals.
  • Experience managing software delivery in fast-moving environments with broad cross-functional scope and ambiguity.

Total Rewards & Benefits

  • Compensation & Equity: Base salary of $204,000 – $306,000 USD supplemented by competitive equity grants.
  • Food & Well-Being: Catered in-house breakfast and lunch, language learning opportunities, monthly social events, and active employee clubs.
  • Comprehensive Healthcare: Top-tier medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage options for employees and eligible dependents.
  • Time Off & Growth: Company-wide annual Hackathon, generous PTO, paid company holidays, and dedicated professional development budgets.
