About the role

Gusto is looking for a full-stack Staff Software Engineer to join the Benefits Renewals team. You will work across the full product lifecycle, from early spec and design through launch and long-term iteration, writing frontend code, building reliable backend APIs, influencing product direction, and owning what happens after a feature ships.

  • Automate complex manual processes in health insurance to reduce errors and save time
  • Mentor other engineers on hard technical problems in complex domains at large scale
  • Help scale one of the largest Ruby on Rails and JavaScript/React applications in the world
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Data, Design, and Platform Engineering to understand customer pain points, then prototype, iterate, and launch

  • Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and deliver measurable customer impact at scale
  • Experience driving large, cross-functional projects end to end through ambiguity, including scoping, sequencing, unblocking, and aligning multiple stakeholders and teams
  • Experience implementing A/B tests or experimentation
  • Experience using AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new product capabilities
  • Curiosity about emerging AI frameworks, and a habit of applying and sharing best practices to scale AI use safely across teams
  • Ability to mentor engineers to maximize their performance and impact
  • Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code
  • Ability to communicate effectively across engineering teams and with business stakeholders
