About the role
As a Software Engineer Intern on Harvey’s Engineering team, you will work alongside experienced engineers on projects that power its AI products. You will collaborate with the Product, AI, Legal, and GTM teams to build secure, intuitive systems that deliver real value to customers. This 12- or 16-week internship suits curious, motivated students who want to learn how modern application-layer and GenAI products are built. You will gain hands-on experience across the stack, contribute to real features, and see your work’s impact in production. Your interests and experience will shape team matching across areas such as Agents, Applied AI, Assistant, Enterprise, Infrastructure, Mobile, and Vault.
Key Responsibilities
- Own a project end to end, from coding and testing to deploying in production, and present your work to peers and leaders
- Write clean, maintainable code that meets team standards, use AI-assisted development tools daily, and own the quality of everything you ship
- Build real knowledge of the systems you support and the users they serve, and bring that perspective into product discussions
- Debug problems in your area, follow escalation procedures, and treat quality as urgent, since users are lawyers doing high-stakes work
- Collaborate through code review, pair programming, design reviews, and technical documentation
- Depending on your team, work on retrieval over large document collections, interfaces for collaborating with AI, multi-region compute infrastructure, enterprise agents, or secure systems for sensitive client data
- Evaluate frontier models alongside senior engineers
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in computer science, engineering, or a related field, with a graduation date of December 2027 or later
- Previous internship experience (required)
- Strong proficiency in one or more languages (Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Java, Go, or similar) and solid general computer science knowledge
- Ability to work from the New York or San Francisco office during the summer cohort, based on your academic schedule
- Bias toward action, with something built start to finish in coursework, a personal project, or a past internship
- Ability to explain complex technical ideas in plain language and favor the simplest solution that works
- Comfort with AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) and curiosity about building LLMs into your coding workflow
- Willingness to work with AI tools during AI-assisted coding interviews
