About the role
Every day, tens of millions of people come to Roblox to explore, create, play, learn, and connect across 3D immersive digital experiences. The Home Infrastructure team builds the mission-critical backend and data systems powering Roblox’s Homepage and Experience Details Page—two of the highest-traffic surfaces on the platform reaching the vast majority of daily active users.
Sitting at the intersection of large-scale distributed systems, ML-powered personalization, data infrastructure, and product experimentation, this team serves as the backbone of content distribution across Roblox.
As Engineering Manager for Home Infrastructure, you will lead a team of Backend and Data Engineers responsible for the end-to-end serving and data pipelines powering core discovery surfaces. You will drive high-impact initiatives like Personalization-as-a-Platform, full-page personalization, real-time user signal infrastructure, and ranking observability—partnering closely with Machine Learning, Data Science, Ads, Marketplace, and Product teams to drive user retention and platform growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering Team Leadership: Recruit, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of Backend and Data Engineers, fostering an engineering culture focused on technical excellence, operational health, and reliability.
- Technical Strategy & Roadmap: Define and execute the multi-year technical roadmap for high-throughput content discovery, ML ranking pipelines, personalized recommendation servers, and real-time data streaming infrastructure.
- Personalization-as-a-Platform: Drive strategic initiatives, including full-page personalization architectures, real-time user intent/signal pipelines, and end-to-end ranking observability.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Machine Learning, Data Science, Product, Design, Frontend, Ads, Marketplace, Economy, Search, and Core Infrastructure teams to deliver measurable product gains.
- High-Scale Operational Excellence: Ensure ultra-high availability, low-latency serving, and fault tolerance across systems handling billions of daily user interactions.
- Data-Driven Experimentation: Guide product and system engineering decisions through rigorous A/B testing, system performance metrics, and data-backed evidence.
Requirements
Distributed Systems & Engineering Management Depth
- 3+ years of professional experience as an Engineering Manager or Tech Lead Manager (TLM), with a track record leading backend, data, ranking, recommendation, search, ads, or personalization engineering pods.
- Distributed Systems Expertise: Deep technical foundation in high-throughput backend services, service-oriented architecture (SOA), data infrastructure, or ML-powered serving platforms.
- High-Scale Consumer Systems: Experience managing teams that build and operate large-scale, high-availability consumer production systems.
- Cross-Functional Execution: Demonstrated track record delivering complex, ambiguous technical initiatives across multiple partner organizations with measurable business impact.
- People Management & Mentorship: Proven capability to coach engineers, grow technical leads, and scale inclusive engineering teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience architecting real-time feature stores, low-latency ML inference gateways, or graph-based recommendation systems.
- Background in high-volume experimentation frameworks and online A/B testing infrastructure.
- Technical familiarity with Go, Java, C++, Python, or modern data streaming stacks (Kafka, Flink, Spark).
Total Rewards & Benefits
- Compensation & Equity: Annual base salary range of $295,250 – $345,040 USD + comprehensive equity compensation package.
- Healthcare & Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance options for employees and eligible dependents.
- Retirement & Financial: 401(k) retirement savings plan with employer match, life insurance, and flexible spending accounts.
- HQ Campus Perks: On-site catered meals, modern collaborative workspaces, learning and development stipends, and team events.
