About the role

At Riot Games, we put players first. VALORANT is a premier, competitive 5v5 character-based tactical shooter enjoyed by tens of millions of players worldwide.

The Organized Play team on VALORANT builds and scales the core competitive features that enable players to form teams, compete together, and track their achievements—powering flagship systems like Premier and Performance Score. Your work is critical to maintaining the integrity, stability, and matchmaking precision for highly skilled players competing at the highest tiers of tactical FPS play.

As a QA Engineer II, you will serve as the quality owner for player-facing competitive features and their underlying backend services. Embedded directly within a multidisciplinary Agile team of engineers, producers, and UI/UX developers, you will design test strategies, lead defect triage, execute whitebox and blackbox testing, guide remote testing groups, and push quality upstream to ensure seamless competitive experiences before code hits production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Quality Ownership & Release Readiness: Own end-to-end quality outcomes, risk assessments, and release readiness sign-offs for assigned Organized Play systems, features, and supporting backend services.
  • Test Strategy & Coverage: Design, execute, and maintain comprehensive, scalable test plans and methodologies across whitebox and blackbox test domains.
  • Defect Triage & Reporting: Lead defect triage, prioritization, and cross-functional communication; analyze quality metrics, defect trends, and test coverage to deliver actionable reports to leadership.
  • Upstream Quality Engineering: Partner closely with software engineers and UI/UX developers early in the feature lifecycle to drive testability, refine UX, and resolve architectural bugs before deployment.
  • Remote Tester Coordination: Guide, coordinate, and delegate test execution to distributed or remote QA testing teams, ensuring consistent test coverage and execution standards.
  • Mentorship & Quality Standards: Coach less-tenured testers and contributors, elevating testing methodologies and quality best practices across the team.

Requirements

Quality Assurance & Software Testing Depth

  • 3+ years of professional Software Quality Assurance experience, with a track record of successfully leading testing efforts on an embedded software team.
  • Defect Management Mastery: Proven experience owning areas of a defect tracking database (Jira)—including lead triage, priority ranking, severity categorization, and trend reporting.
  • Distributed Tester Coordination: Hands-on experience directing, scheduling, and guiding remote or vendor testing resources.
  • Agile Integration: Demonstrated experience working embedded directly within multidisciplinary Agile (Scrum/Kanban) development pods.
  • Metrics & Data Analysis: Experience analyzing quality metrics, test pass/fail rates, and defect data to generate executive-facing quality insights.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Development and testing experience across multiple platforms (PC and Console).
  • Hands-on experience working inside Unreal Engine 4 or Unreal Engine 5.
  • Professional QA experience working on First-Person Shooters (FPS), or extensive personal engagement playing competitive FPS games (VALORANT, CS:GO/CS2).
  • Proven ability to influence quality standards and testing practices beyond your immediate feature team scope.
  • Recognized Industry Certifications:
    • ISTQB Foundation Level / ISTQB Agile Tester
    • ICAgile Agile Testing (ICP-TST)
    • ISTQB Expert Level / ICAgile Test Expert (ICE-AT)

Total Rewards & Perks

  • Flexible Work & Paid Time Off: Open paid time off policy, firmwide recharge breaks, and flexible work schedules designed for work/life balance.
  • Comprehensive Healthcare: Full medical, dental, and vision insurance options, plus 100% company-paid life and disability coverage.
  • Family & Future Support: Paid parental leave for birth/adoptive parents, domestic partner coverage, and 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Player Perks: Game allowances, wellness stipends, product discounts, and access to Riot's collaborative studio spaces.
