About the role
At Upstart, we are on a mission to radically reduce the cost and complexity of borrowing for all Americans. As the leading AI lending marketplace, our platform runs over one million predictions per borrower using more than 3,000 signals to expand access to affordable credit.
As the Senior Engineering Manager for Borrower Experience, you will lead a high-performing team of fullstack software engineers who own borrower-facing web and mobile platforms—including the Funded Borrower Dashboard, payment journeys, and Sierra, our AI-powered servicing agent. Reporting directly to the Director of Engineering, you will bridge user-facing frontend applications with resilient backend microservices, APIs, and servicing infrastructure. You will partner closely with Product, Design, Analytics, Operations, and Compliance to modernize our servicing architecture, automate loan management, and ensure high operational reliability across regulated fintech workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering Leadership & Coaching: Recruit, lead, and develop a team of fullstack engineers building borrower-facing web, mobile, and AI-driven products.
- Fullstack Technical Ownership: Oversee end-to-end execution across user interfaces, backend APIs, distributed microservices, and third-party financial integrations.
- Product & AI Innovation: Partner with Product and Design to enhance the Funded Borrower Dashboard, repayment flows, and automated support through Sierra (our servicing AI agent).
- Multi-Quarter Strategy & Modernization: Define and execute a long-term technical strategy that advances loan servicing capabilities while modernizing system architecture for developer velocity, observability, and scale.
- Regulatory Compliance & Reliability: Simplify complex credit, payment, and regulatory servicing requirements into intuitive, compliant product experiences.
- Operational Excellence: Build a culture of continuous delivery, test automation, experiment-driven product development, and clear visibility into operational risks and trade-offs.
Requirements

- 10–15 years of total software engineering experience, including 4–7 years in direct engineering management.
- Demonstrated success leading fullstack engineering teams building high-adoption, consumer- or borrower-facing web and mobile applications.
- Strong technical depth across frontend architecture, backend microservices, REST/gRPC APIs, distributed systems, and modern cloud design.
- Proven experience leading software engineering teams within regulated domains such as fintech, lending, payments, or banking infrastructure.
- Track record of defining and delivering multi-quarter technical strategies while balancing architectural modernization with feature delivery.
- Excellent cross-functional communication skills with a history of explaining complex technical trade-offs to executive, product, and compliance stakeholders.
Work Logistics
- Ability to work remotely within the United States or Canada (excluding Quebec), aligned with East/West Coast business hours.
- Ability to participate in quarterly in-person team onsites (2–4 days per session).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building or scaling AI-powered customer support tools, conversational agents, or automated service desks.
- Hands-on experience modernizing legacy servicing architectures or high-volume payment processing engines.
- Familiarity with modern fullstack web/mobile tech stacks (e.g., React, React Native, TypeScript, Python, Kotlin/Java, AWS, GraphQL).

- Compensation & Equity: Competitive base salary + target annual bonus eligibility + annual equity grants vesting quarterly.
- Industry-Leading 2:1 Retirement Match: 401(k) / Group RRSP retirement plan with a $2-for-$1 company match up to $15,000 annually (USD in US / CAD in Canada).
- Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP): Discounted stock purchase options for eligible US team members.
- Healthcare & Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage; Health Savings Account (HSA) employer contributions; annual wellness allowance.
