About the role

Duolingo is the world's most popular learning app, on a mission to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available. Design at Duolingo brings purpose, emotion, and delight to every interaction—combining world-class visual craft with unexpected quirk and fun to keep over half a billion learners engaged.

As a Senior Product Designer, you will lead major design workstreams across our mobile apps, website, and digital touchpoints. You will partner closely with engineers, product managers, artists, and animators to shape intuitive, gamified learner flows that feel distinctly Duolingo. In this role, you will sweat the micro-details of interaction design, build rapid high-fidelity prototypes, expand Duolingo’s visual design language, and serve as a peer leader and mentor across the broader design organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Consumer Mobile App Design: Design simple, playful, and delightful end-to-end learning flows for Duolingo's consumer mobile applications (iOS and Android).
  • High-Fidelity Prototyping: Rapidly create interactive, high-fidelity prototypes to test hypotheses, validate UI/UX patterns, and communicate motion/interaction details.
  • Design System & Visual Language: Collaborate with artists, illustrators, and brand designers to evolve and scale Duolingo’s signature visual design system and UI patterns.
  • Cross-Functional Product Leadership: Partner with Product Managers and Software Engineers to define feature specifications, roadmap priorities, and implementation trade-offs.
  • Holistic Craft & Micro-Interactions: Sweat the details across all facets of product design—including UI layout, micro-animations, copy tone, and business metric impact.
  • Peer Leadership & Mentorship: Lead major design initiatives independently while mentoring junior and mid-level designers across the design team.

Requirements

Product Design & Craft Depth

  • Demonstrated experience shipping consumer mobile applications at scale within a high-velocity product organization.
  • Portfolio Excellence: An online portfolio showcasing clean, simple, and high-impact consumer mobile app experiences with exceptional visual design and interaction details.
  • Prototyping Fluency: Expertise in building fast, high-fidelity interactive prototypes (using Figma, Principle, Protopie, or similar tools).
  • Design Communication: Exceptional ability to articulate design decisions, trade-offs, and user research insights simply and persuasively.
  • Ambiguity & Feedback: High tolerance for ambiguity and complex problems, paired with a strong appetite for feedback to refine design craft continuously.

Education & Work Logistics

  • Passion for educational technology and consumer product design.
  • Ability to work within Duolingo's product development hubs in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leveraging AI and LLM tools for rapid concept generation and product design workflows.
  • Skills shaping UI motion design, micro-animations, or Lottie/Rive asset integration for mobile interfaces.
  • Deep understanding of brand identity and how brand expression drives core business metrics in consumer software.
  • Track record of rapid career progression and leadership recognition in previous design organizations.

Total Rewards & Benefits

  • Compensation & Equity: Base salary of $150,000 – $200,000 USD supplemented by competitive equity compensation.
  • Holistic Well-Being: Choice of top-tier health plans with comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and dependents.
  • Culture & Perks: In-house catered meals, language learning opportunities, bi-annual company hackathons, and vibrant social events.
  • Growth & Flexibility: Dedicated professional development stipends, flexible paid time off, and mental health support programs.
