About the role

Roblox’s data infrastructure powers analytics, machine learning, and critical product decisions across a global platform serving more than 200 million daily active users.

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Data Infrastructure team, you will architect and build Roblox's next-generation Metrics Platform / Semantic Layer. In this high-impact role, you will enable teams to define trusted business metrics once, govern them centrally, and consume them seamlessly across diverse query, compute, and feature platforms (Spark, Flink, Trino, Druid). Additionally, you will lead efforts to integrate AI/LLM-powered agentic interfaces—embedding intelligent, self-serve data discovery mechanisms across the platform interaction layer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Metrics Platform & Semantic Layer Architecture: Design, build, and scale a unified metrics platform enabling registration, discovery, versioning, dependency management, and governance for shared metric definitions.
  • Compute Engine Integration: Connect logical metric definitions to physical materialization and serving layers, maintaining semantic consistency across Spark, Flink, Trino, Druid, and feature store platforms.
  • Agentic AI & LLM Interface Integration: Embed AI/ML capabilities into the data infrastructure, leveraging LLMs for autonomous data discovery, definition generation, and self-serve user interaction.
  • Scalability & Reliability Engineering: Design distributed microservices and data pipelines that are observable, resilient, and performant at consumer-internet scale (200M+ DAUs).
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Data Engineers, Analytics Consumers, ML Engineers, and Infrastructure teams to adapt platform features to real-world product needs.
  • Engine-Agnostic Design: Drive architectural decisions that decouple metric definitions from single execution engines, ensuring long-term extensibility.

Requirements

Distributed Systems & Data Engineering

  • 6+ years of professional experience building, designing, testing, and operating production-grade, large-scale distributed systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with data platforms, metadata/catalog systems, semantic layers, analytical systems, or large-scale data processing pipelines.
  • Strong software development capabilities in Java, Go, Scala, or Python, with a track record of building reliable APIs and backend services.
  • Solid familiarity with SQL and distributed processing technologies (Apache Spark, Apache Flink, Trino, Druid, or similar).

Technical Leadership & Education

  • Proven ability to influence technical roadmaps, mentor engineers, and drive alignment across cross-cutting engineering initiatives.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or sufficient practical experience.
  • Ability to work onsite 3 days per week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays) at Roblox HQ in San Mateo, CA.
  • Note: Roblox may not be able to support certain visa categories or future H-1B sponsorship for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience designing metric/semantic platforms, data catalogs, data lineage tools, or governance platforms.
  • Experience integrating unified metric definitions across multiple query or compute engines simultaneously.
  • Contributions to open-source projects in the data infrastructure ecosystem (e.g., Iceberg, Amundsen, OpenLineage, Feast).
  • Direct experience operating data infrastructure at consumer-internet scale.

Total Rewards & Workplace Benefits

  • Compensation: Base salary of $243,290 – $295,250 USD + comprehensive long-term equity grant package.
  • Healthcare & Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage options; mental health resources and wellness stipends.
  • Financial Security: 401(k) program with company matching; life and disability insurance.
  • Time Off & Work Culture: Generous PTO policies, observed holidays, and hybrid workplace flexibility.
