Senior Frontend Engineer - Luau & React Platform

As a Senior Frontend Engineer on the Application Surfaces team, you will architect and shape the future of Roblox’s consumer-facing application layer—including core surface hubs like Home, Avatar, Discover, and Search. In this high-impact role, you will bridge modern web engineering practices (React, TypeScript, state management architectures) with Roblox’s custom, high-performance Luau-based UI ecosystem. You will create reusable UI abstractions, define clean API boundaries, optimize client-side responsiveness and memory footprints, and establish architectural standards that enable hundreds of engineers to ship features faster.

Key Responsibilities

• Core Surface Architecture: Design and implement robust, extensible frontend architectures powering Roblox’s highest-traffic consumer surfaces (Home, Avatar Editor, Search/Discover).
• React & Luau UI Abstractions: Build, evolve, and maintain Roblox’s internal React-inspired Luau UI libraries, promoting component reusability, predictable state management, and fast rendering across devices.
• Cross-Platform Engineering: Ensure seamless client performance and cross-platform UI rendering across Web, iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and console environments.
• Performance Profiling & Optimization: Diagnose and resolve client-side performance bottlenecks—including memory leaks, frame drops, network latency, and startup load times.
• Architectural Standards & Tooling: Define clean API contracts, module boundaries, and architectural patterns (Flux, MVVM, Component-driven design) while driving comprehensive unit and integration testing suites.
• Cross-Functional & Technical Leadership: Partner with Product, Design, and Core Client Infrastructure teams to deliver cohesive features; review code, author RFCs, and mentor frontend engineers.

Requirements

Senior Frontend Systems Depth

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a substantial focus on architecting user-facing frontend applications for large-scale, high-traffic systems.
• Modern Web & Mobile Stack: Deep expertise in JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML5, CSS3, React, and component-driven UI architecture.
• State Management & Architecture: Mastery of modern state management paradigms (Redux, Flux, or custom unidirectional data flows) and software design patterns as applied to UI applications.
• Performance Engineering: Hands-on experience with client-side performance profiling, memory management, benchmarking, and debugging tools.
• Multi-Platform Experience: Experience building or maintaining cross-platform applications or shared libraries spanning Web, Mobile (iOS/Android), or Desktop environments.
• Language Adaptability: Proficiency with modern scripting languages (TypeScript, Swift, or Kotlin) and strong willingness to master Roblox's embedded Luau language stack.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience working with embedded scripting engines or bridging web framework concepts (e.g., React paradigms) into custom C++/Lua environments.
• Knowledge of lower-level C++ client architectures, native rendering pipelines, or mobile app shell frameworks.
• Background in building design systems, internal developer platforms, or shared UI component libraries at massive scale.
